Schedule of Activities for the Guam Liberation Carnival

If your looking to have some fun and excitement with friends and family it might be time to check out the Guam Liberation Carnival which is scheduled to be open until August 1st.  Here is the schedule of activities for notable events at this year’s Liberation Carnival:

July 4th
6:30pm to 7:30pm – Liberation Queen Fashion Show
9:00pm – Independence Day Fireworks Show at the carnival in Paseo

July 5th
7:45pm to 8:45pm – Taste of Da Island Polynesian Show

July 8th
7:30pm to 8:30pm – Kaju Kenbo Guam martial arts demonstration

July 9th
8:45pm to 9:45pm – Te’Ora Fire and Cultural Show

July 17th
5:00pm to 6:00pm – Guam National Guard band, U.S. Marine Corps band performance

July 20th
7:00pm – Candlelight vigil and remembrance-wreath presentation at the carnival stage

July 21st
10:00am – Liberation Day parade along Marine Corps Drive in Hagatna
9:00pm – Liberation Day fireworks in Hagatna

August 1st
Liberation Day raffle drawing at carnival
Midnight: Official closing of Guam Liberation Carnival

In addition to these special events and ceremonies at the Guam Liberation Carnival grounds there will also be nightly entertainment by popular music artists and bands from the island of Guam.  The live music entertainment will range from reggae, island music, acoustic, and rock.  There will also be other special events and ceremonies throughout the month around the island in celebration of Independence Day for the United States and Liberation Day for Guam.  There is a lot to do this month so we encourage everyone to attend and enjoy the many events happening this month.

Month of March Officially Recognized as Chamorro Month

The month of March officially became Chamorro Month this year when it was proclaimed by acting Governor of Guam Mike Cruz at the Chamorro Village in Hagatna.  The theme of this year’s Chamorro Month is “Fanachu Put i Tano’-ta, Para i Famagu’on-ta,” which means “Stand up for our lands, for the future of our children.”

A number of events for Chamorro Month are scheduled throughout this month.  See the schedule below for some Chamorro Month events:

March 3 to March 5
10am to 5pm: Open visits to the latte house construction, and canoe carving at Ypao Beach Park.

March 7
10am to 1pm: Magellan Day festivities at Umatac Bay.

March 8
10am to 5pm: Open visits to latte house construction, and canoe carving at Ypao Beach Park

March 9
8am to 5pm: Chamorro language competition at the University of Guam.

March 10 to March 12
10am to 5pm: Open visits to latte house construction, canoe carving at Ypao Beach Park

March 13
11am to 2pm: Culinary food tasting at Guam Premier Outlets in Tamuning.

March 15 to March 19
10am to 5pm: Open visits to latte house construction, and canoe carving at Ypao Beach Park.

March 20
9am to 1pm: Hot and spicy chicken competition at Cost-U-Less in Tamuning.
9:30am to 1:30pm: Chamorro song festival at Guam Community College

March 22 to March 26
10am to 5pm: Open visits to latte house construction, and canoe carving at Ypao Beach Park.

March 27
10am to 2pm: Weaving demonstration/competition at The Point, DFS Galleria.

March 29 to March 31
10am to 5pm: Open visits to latte house construction, and canoe carving at Ypao Beach Park in Tumon

22nd Guam Micronesia Island Fair at Ypao Beach Park

If your on island between October 16-18, 2009 mark your calendars for the 22nd Guam Micronesia Island Fair which is hosted by the Guam Visitors Bureau at Ypao Beach Park in Tumon.  The theme of the 22nd Guam Micronesia Island Fair is “Celebrating Our Building Traditions” with traditional hut builders erecting a Chamorro Hut in the park as well as a traditional Kosrae cooking house.

Various islands around the Marianas and Micronesia  (Saipan, Rota, Yap, Chuuk, Tinian, Palau, and many more…) will be participating in this year’s fair sharing their culture, arts, crafts, and traditions for those people who come to participate in the Micronesia Island Fair.  In addition, there will be cultural performances, various products for sale, and a showcase of outrigger canoes by TASI, a non-profit group whose mission is to preserve the knowledge and art of traditional Pacific island navigation.

So if your interested in learning more about the culture and traditions of the Micronesian people and the Marianas come join the island at Ypao Beach Park from October 16-18.

Guam’s 2009 Liberation Day Carnival Opens Tomorrow

The 2009 Liberation Day Carnival opens tomorrow at Paseo Park in Hagatna in celebration of the 65th Annual Liberation of Guam and will run through August 2, 2009.  Participants can expect a fun and exciting night filled with amusement rides, games, food, local Chamorro arts and crafts, and entertainment from local Guam bands and artists.  This year’s carnival will be more focused on showcasing the culture of the island in a more family-friendly atmosphere.

If your visiting the island, Guam’s Liberation Day Carnival is one event you should experience at least once while your here.  You’ll be able to enjoy Chamorro food, experience Guam’s culture, and meet friendly people from Guam.  The Liberation Day Carnival is one of the largest events held yearly on the island of Guam and everyone from the island usually visits the carnival at least once during the few weeks it is open.

Hours for Guam’s 2009 Liberation Day Carnival are:
Monday to Thursday: 6pm-12am
Friday: 6pm-2am
Weekends, July 4, and July 21: 2pm-12am

Surf the Basin ‘09 at Hagatna Boat Basin

If you have nothing to do this weekend and love surfing your in for a treat! The  “Surf the Basin ‘09″ contest is being held at the Paseo de Susana Statue of Liberty Park, more  popularly known as Hagatna Boat Basin, by major sponsors Monster Energy Drink, GTA Teleguam, and DNA Evolution.

Guam’s best surfers and body boarders will be out there strutting their stuff on Saturday May 2, 2009.  Showtime starts early at 6:30am with the first heat starting at 7:00am.  With this being the third weekend for the surfing contest, the Men’s Surfing Open and Body Boarding Open divisions are taking place.

If you love surfing this is a great activity to check out this weekend;  waves are expected to be in the 4 to 5 foot range for the event.
